My 13-year-old stepdaughter, Molly, does not get to stay with us very often. This is due to the fact that she lives about 45 minutes away and has a completely different schedule than my husband, who works night shift and weekends. Even though she doesn't get to spend a lot of time here, I have tried to make her feel as at-home as possible and decided to update her bedroom as a surprise.
Since we moved into our apartment we have not had the funds to do much redecorating or updating. I decided to start with her room.
Our apartment dates back to around the 30's or 40's, with wood floors and high ceilings. To break up the wall size in the room where Molly stays, someone has, in the past, added a make-shift chair rail made of cheap stripping. It cannot be removed due to years of paint and paper (which is basically holding the plaster walls together). I decided to work with it.
Etsy was my source for the hot pink wall decal, and I duplicated the color for the stripping piece along the wall. She was surprised and pleased, and I am very happy with her reaction and the outcome of my work. (Two coats of primer, two coats of white paint on the upper wall and one coat of gray on the bottom and pink on the stripping; one coat of glossy white on doors and trim.)
* Afterthought
I did not think to take before photos - I just wanted to get it done. The room was originally a deep, dingy beige on top and navy blue on the bottom.... very, very dark and gloomy. Hence the two coats of primer.

Cute ideas and it's so nice of you to redo her room first and make her feel more comfortable.
Awww, how sweet of you to do that for her! I bet she loves it, it's so cute! Great job!
I also think it was terrific of you to do her room first and that heart is fantastic. Love the look.
looks great, nice job. pink and gray go well together.
the hearts and paint job look great!
I love the color scheme you chose! I'm happy it turned out so well and that she loved it too!
Looks fab, @vintagebabe ! And the color scheme is great for the transition into young adult.
That's adorable!! I bet she loves it.
Very Cute idea for the room!!
I'm so glad you posted pics of this. Awesome. It's just like I imagined when you were telling me. You're a great step-mom and she's lucky. :)
@lamerchick - I'm really happy with it, and she squealed when she saw it. :-) Thanks!!!
I was afraid of the vinyl, but it went on really easily. If anybody is interested in this design, just know the "flyaway" hearts beaside the main heart are not placed that way on the transfer sheet... you have to place them yourself. I just followed the design in the pic and it turned out well.
It looks like you did a great job. I love the colors!
The heart is awesome too. It was worth waiting for. :)
You did such a great job! It really turned out so well, the amount of love you put in shows through.
Awesome job. I hate painting. We've had to repaint our place twice and still not done. I'm lousy at it. Next time we're bringing in professionals. Kudos to all of your hard work!!!!!! Love the heart and the way it's just flying like a kite.
CUTE! I want those decals in my room!
That's a fab job! There's nothing like a dingy, undecorated room to make you feel blah, so the fact that she has an awesome room to hang out in is so sweet of you. Hearts for you!
Looks great, when are you going to come and redecorate my room?
@kabroskie - Sweet deal! As long as I don't have to paint anymore.... at least not four coats! Bleh!!!
Thanks to everyone for the sweet comments. I grew up with step-parents and know that it's nice to feel welcome when you share a home, so I wanted her to enjoy the room as much as possible.
I figure if we change her style or move out and need to cover up the pink, I'll just leave it white and grey and paint the strip around the room something different. No more primer coats for me! LOL
I wish I could paint. We're not supposed to though. I guess I could, but then I'd have to put it back like it is. All white. I am SO tired of white.
Very cool!
cute! that is very sweet of you to think of her and to show such a kind gesture, no matter how small.
wow, this looks amazing. its really great of you to put so much care into a room that she doesn't come to that often. shes a very lucky girl =]
Turned out great!
I love this! You did such a great job with the room. Hey, I'm in my late 20s, and I would love this room. (also, a pic of Robert Pattinson never hurts ;))
like the heart thing!
That is very sweet of you, maybe she will come over more often!

that's so sweet! and it looks great! i love it! ♥
You did a great job! I would have loved a room like that when I was 13.
somehow just saw this now, how cute great job.
OMG you're the best! You have such a great big heart. To put everything else aside and decorate Mollys room first is fckn nice! Love your ending....(you know what I'm talking about)
Muuuaaahhh!!! <3
Now I want to live in this room - it's more "me" than the rest of my apartment. LOL
